Dehua kiln is a famous kiln in the south of ancient China. It is named after Dehua County, Fujian Province. The production of Dehua porcelain began in the Neolithic age, flourished in the Tang and Song Dynasties, and flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It has a unique technique and has not been inherited. It is one of the birthplaces of Chinese ceramic culture, which is also called the three modern porcelain capitals of China together with Jingdezhen in Jiangxi Province and Liling in Hunan Province. It has always been an important foreign trade product of China. It is well-known in the world together with silk and tea, and has made contributions to the dissemination of porcelain making technology and cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.
In the Ming Dynasty, he Chaozong, an artist of Dehua porcelain, used the local high-quality kaolin to make exquisite Dehua porcelain sculptures by eight techniques, including kneading, sculpting, carving, scraping, splicing and pasting. His glaze color is milky white, such as fat as jade, and the color is plain and elegant. He enjoys the reputation of "ivory white", "Chinese white" and "Pearl of international porcelain world", becoming the representative of Chinese white porcelain. Among the porcelains Zheng He brought to the west, there were Dehua porcelains from Fujian. When Marco Polo, a famous Italian traveler, visited Quanzhou, Fujian Province, he praised Dehua ceramics and took them to all over the world. He Chaozong, also known as He Lai, is a representative figure of porcelain sculpture in Dehua kiln. He Chaozong, a porcelain sculptor in Ming Dynasty, is called "porcelain sage". He is good at learning and inheriting the forms of expression of ancient Chinese traditional religious art, absorbing clay sculpture, wood carving, stone carving and other creative techniques, and integrating them into his own artistic creation. His works have a wide range of subjects, including deities and Buddha statues, such as Dharma, arhat, Wenchang emperor, Guanyin, and Tathagata. Chaozong porcelain sculpture, with the simple sculpture beauty and the texture beauty of the glaze material, is as beautiful as the fat jade, with strong texture and high appreciation value.
The sculptures "Guanyin with knee crossed", "Damo" and "Guanyin across the sea" collected by Beijing Palace Museum and Quanzhou cultural administration are all listed as national first-class cultural relics. The "sitting Guanyin" found in foreign countries, two porcelain Guanyin and one Dharma that were exiled from Putian County to Japan in the Republic of China, the ancestor of Fuhu who was taken away by the United States, and three folk Guanyin and Wenchang emperors in Putian County are all top-quality treasures. He Chaozong is not only good at making Guanyin Buddha statues, but also making delicate and elegant incense pots, small bottles and other things to enjoy. His superb skills have been handed down to the world.

[collection introduction]: Guanyin statue is one of the common themes of Dehua kiln. It is a masterpiece of he Chaozong, a famous porcelain carving master at home and abroad. His porcelain carvings were regarded as "the unique treasures in the world" in the "Western and Eastern" market in the 16th century, and people "would not hesitate to buy them with tens of thousands of gold". His sculptures are made of Guanyin porcelain of different shapes. With the delicate texture and unique ivory white of Dehua porcelain, they show the charm of quiet, beautiful and soft man. They are simple and elegant, smooth in clothing, vivid in expression and vivid in image. In Japan and Southeast Asia, they are regarded as the most precious things. In the eyes of Western Europeans, they are regarded as "the finest works of Oriental Art". The body of Guanyin statue is thick, the glaze is white and yellow, the teeth are white, like frozen jade. Guanyin sits on the lotus leaf with Ruyi in his hand, treads on the lotus flower with one foot, and the boy holds the longevity peach on the right hand, which is placed on the top of the wave as a whole. Guanyin method is like a full moon, with a smile on the mouth, a kind face and a very vivid expression. The glaze is pure and lustrous, the bottom of the seat is exposed, and the inside of the embryo is firm and thin. On the back, there is a gourd seal character "Dehua" and a square Yin seal character "he Chaozong seal character". With his exquisite and skillful sculpture talent, the author has successfully created an image of Guanyin, which looks charitable, elegant and calm, serene and self-contained, with both eyes drooping and contemplating.
This statue of Avalokitesvara is far away from Buddhist scriptures. It has become the embodiment of people's imagination and expectation of beauty, goodness and holiness. Buddhism spread from India to China in the Eastern Han Dynasty, and then to Japan with the cultural exchange between China and Japan. People in the Nanyang islands believed in Buddhism very early. Dehua porcelain clay is excellent, which is very suitable for firing holy Guanyin in white. The Guanyin ceramics show its extraordinary and compassionate charm. The export of these statues to foreign countries caused a strong reaction, and Japan and Southeast Asian Buddhist countries especially loved them. His works are subordinated to material, content and human spiritual demands, reflecting the independent and independent quality characteristics of art. Therefore, it is not too much to say that he Chaozong is the first one in Chinese religious sculpture art, which not only promotes the process of Buddhism nationalization and secularization, but also has milestone significance.
